Drone Aerial Photography for Houston Real Estate: A Complete Guide
Jon Everette
Houston Real Estate Photographer · FAA Part 107 Certified
Drone photography has become one of the most requested add-ons for Houston real estate listings — and for good reason. Houston's flat terrain and master-planned communities with lakes, parks, and amenities are made for aerial photography. Here's everything you need to know.
When Drone Photography Is Worth It
Drone aerials deliver the most value for specific property types and situations. Not every listing needs them — but for the right property, they're transformative.
- Lakefront or waterfront properties (Cinco Ranch lakes, Lake Conroe, Clear Lake)
- Homes backing to parks, green spaces, or golf courses
- Large lot properties (1+ acres) where scale is a selling feature
- New construction in master-planned communities — shows the neighborhood context
- Properties with pools and outdoor entertainment areas viewed from above
- Corner lots or unique-shaped lots where orientation matters
- Homes near Houston landmarks or desirable neighborhood amenities
FAA Rules and What They Mean for Your Listing
All commercial drone photography requires FAA Part 107 certification. Jon holds a current Part 107 Remote Pilot Certificate. Before every Houston-area shoot, Jon checks airspace restrictions via the FAA's B4UFLY app — some areas near Hobby Airport, Bush Intercontinental, or Ellington Field require special authorization.
- Part 107 certified: legal for all commercial real estate drone work
- Airspace pre-checked before every shoot — no surprises on listing day
- Most Houston suburbs (Katy, Sugar Land, The Woodlands, Pearland) are in unrestricted airspace
- Inner Loop Houston near airports may require LAANC authorization — obtainable with advance notice
- HOA restrictions are separate from FAA rules — Jon checks both before confirming any shoot
Agent tip: book drone shoots 3–5 days in advance to allow time for any necessary airspace authorization (LAANC). Same-day drone bookings near restricted zones may not be possible.

“Drone shots of a lake-backing home in Cinco Ranch or a golf course-view home in Indian Springs create an emotional reaction in buyers that ground-level photos can't replicate. Buyers see the lifestyle, not just the house.”
